August 2003

C's hot times for summer.

Amy Holland Guest Speaker at C's August Meeting.
August brings a trio of C's events to the San Jo'Wackin Valley. Come to the August meeting because Amy Holland Editor of The Friction Zone (F.Z.) motorcycle magazine will be speaking to our group. Go to any big bike dealer and a stack of F. Z. magazines are there for free. About a year ago I wrote an article on Dan Rouit's Flat-Track Museum for F.Z. This freebie mag has lots of articles on safety with new bike reviews and rides to go on around California. Amy will dazzle us with her knowledge but at this time I can't say what topic she will be speaking about. Come it's just an extra excuse to get out of the house on a hot August night. She should have the current issue of F.Z. to hand out.
Friday night at the Clovis Farmers Market August 29
*The Friday night after the meeting head for the Clovis farmers market in old town Clovis on Polaski Ave. Come show off your old bike. C's will again show off our bikes to people who wouldn't normally make it out to a bike show. It's fun to talk to people who use to have a bike like yours "way back when."  Drive in the north end off third St. when you can. For those who have a loose schedule come around 5p.m. You can drive in and unload your truck if you need to. Lots of food there with street vendors and sit down restaurants to choose from. As usual there is always live music and plenty of that great valley produce to take home and savor. people start heading for home around dusk.

C's Annual beat the heat evening ride to Bass Lake Sunday August 24
*In August C's will also have a beat the heat ride with our annual ride to Bass lake on a Sunday evening. We will ride the back way to Ducy's on the lake have dinner either upstairs at the casual dining or downstairs where the dining experience is more formal. Then return when the sun has set and it might be cool enough in the mountains to need a jacket. The ride will leave from the Chevron Gas station on Blackstone north of Herndon. We will leave at 5:30 pm. so we can get to Bass lake by dinner time.

Thanks to all who sent in $ for the newsletter.
We have had a good response from C's members sending in dollars for the newsletter. Many of the people who we haven't seen at the meetings and a few who we have, again filled the C's coffers. Our other fun-d raiser for the year the garage tour is coming up September 21.  (see details in this issue) Between these two (The July newsletter and the garage tour) we get most of the money that keeps our newsletter going when the 50/50 pot is not enough to keep us afloat. Thanks for the good response! If you have a good Idea on how to better spend the money let us know.

Garage Tour 2003 Set for Sunday September 21
The loose ends are coming together for Garage Tour 2003. Stops this year include Chuck Coffman's, Kelly Broyle's and Bob Miller's and a mystery stop yet to be announced. The last stop and Barbecue will be at Matt Blake's Iron Horse Corral.  Matt Has his business of making reproduction fenders and other parts for Indian motorcycles at his house north of Clovis. This year there will be No Freeway Riding so you can ride your tastefully restored vintage bike, small tiddler, or rusty old heap and not worry about keeping up with speeding traffic. This year we will start off from Dan Rouit's Flat Track Museum, 309 W Rialto. Arrive early to check out the museum. Blast off will be 9am. This year we will also have a 50/50 poker hand with half of the money going to C's and the other half going to the High hand and the worst hand. Cost for the ride is still 5 bucks and the fantastic Barbecue is also 5 bucks. C's usually raises a couple of hundred dollars at the tour. This year we are possibly looking at a new P.A. system for the club. Two years ago we used the money from the tour to buy a copy machine to reduce our printing costs. The menu this year for the BBQ will be bigger and better with items on the grill that won't take as long to perpare which translates into less waiting for lunch. If you can't make the ride and the BBQ then consider going to just one of the two. We would love to see you there!

Dave Gearhart reports on his trip to England and Europe.
Our July newsletter had a story I airmailed Bob about the Motorcycle Weekend at Beaulieu in England. During the next week I attended bike gatherings at the Waterman Pub and at Stratford-On-Avon, the beautiful hometown of William Shakespeare. I was staying with Mark Powell who some of you have met here, and since he is a truck driver we went to a big truck show at the huge Shepton Mallet fairgrounds. It was as big as the Fresno Fair, with rows of new trucks, old and vintage trucks, parts, food and a carnival nearly as big as our fair. Demonstrations went on in the huge arena, with tow trucks turning over and righting different kinds of trucks, I mean lorries. Semis are “articulated” so they are known as ‘artics’. Two of my friends are lorry drivers so I’ve had the privilege to tour much of England by lorry. Come to our Wednesday night meeting and I’ll tell you about the unbelievable motorcycle drill team at the show. as well as the helicopter and jet dragster
Iflew from Birmingham to Copenhagen, Denmark where Teri met me. We took the train over the new bridge between Denmark and Sweden where Teri had been staying with friends and relatives. Her cousin’s son Lars, who has been to two of our meetings while visiting here, had borrowed a bike for me to ride in Sweden. It turned out to be a very new Yamaha VeeMax belonging to his friend Robert. Weather was great as we rode for many days around the beautiful Swedish countryside and beach resort towns. We also took a two day ride to the south east corner of Sweden where we saw histo~ic fishing villages, rolling hills, and Viking monuments. Like much of Europe, thousand year old buildings or ruins or sites may be around the next corner. The VeeMax was a terrific bike to ride, a great tourer and pretty rare in Sweden. Even on dirt or gravel roads it handled well. We went to two biker bashes late at night in the wooded hills, places where bikers gather, camp, have bands and dancing in big meadows or fields. These were places where I would have been more comfortable on my DR 350 , but the VeeMax was a hoot! Roads in Sweden can be small, but not like those in England Bob described last month. Surfaces are fine, traffic is light ( but Fast) and people are friendly and helpful everywhere Before leaving Sweden we wanted to visit the far north, Lapland, The Land Of the Midnight Sun. From Stockholm we took a long overnight train to Lulia where we caught a bus/truck for Jokkmokk above the Arctic Circle. Reindeer ran in front of the bus as we crossed the Arctic Circle in surprisingly warm weather and visited the Sami ( or Lapp) cultural museum in Jokkmokk. The nearby old wooden church has a low but wide wall around it with niches in it , as though to store firewood. No, it is where all of the bodies of those who die during the winter are stored until the ground thaws out in the spring.
Making our way back to Stockholm, we visited friends and saw the sights of this beautiful city. Our friend Caroline was an exchange student in Fresno, and Teri had visited her and her mother Karen in the past. We visited the new home they are building with Gertz,Karen’s boyfriend. And to top off a fabulous ending to a wonderful trip, Gerts took us on a tour of Stockholm’s bay, canals, rivers and locks in his beautiful 60’s vintage wooden cabin cruser. Only the people of Stockholm are more beautiful than its waters, islands and scenery! And if you want to hear about Gerts’ motorcycle, come to our Wednesday meeting!!
